Frequently asked questions

OCD
Obsessions and compulsions are commonly grouped together and better known as OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

As an analytical hypnotherapist, these symptoms are treated as separate entities, or as an obsessional neurosis, although it is most uncommon to be both obsessive and compulsive.

Obsessions tend to come in the form of involuntary thoughts, feelings or impulses.

These can take many forms. They are often difficult for the sufferer to control or rid themselves of. Examples include violent or sexual thought processes and the fear of acting them out, Excessive concern with routine and safety, often concerning the home or daily rituals and concern with contamination or dirt. They are constant and frequent thought processes that can dominate the mind and can cause distress. Symptoms can include:
  • Checking or counting rituals
  • Excessive hand washing
  • Certain 'magical beliefs' or rituals that have to be performed
  • Contast negative thoughts
  • Concern with hygiene and dirt and the possibility of contamination
  • Chronic insomnia
  • Persistent jealous thoughts

A compulsion is often an activity that is undertaken ritualistically in order to relieve the person of the anxiety they would feel had they not undertaken that activity. Common compulsions include, excessive washing, repeating words and phrases, counting and touching objects. It is a repetitive action that the person feels forced to perform.

Compulsions can be very addictive as they provide a relief from the stress and anxiety that the person feels which will often strengthen the urge to repeat the compulsion. Other common compulsive / addictive behaviours include:
  • Over eating
  • Comfort eating
  • Drinking (to excess or daily)
  • Gambling or gambling addictions
  • Smoking
  • Nail biting
  • Sexual activity
I have successfully treated hundreds of people for these anxiety related conditions at my Wirral and Chester Clinics , utlilising analytical hypnotherapy.
